Titian, 1488-1576, was the most versatile of Italian painters, the most important member of the 16th-century Venetian school. The artist was equally adept with portraits, landscape backgrounds, and mythological and religious subjects. Titian's painting methods, particularly in the use of color, would exercise a profound influence not only on painters of the Italian Renaissance, but on future generations of Western art. One of Titian paintings, Diana and Actaeon, was purchased by London's National Gallery and the National Galleries of Scotland in 2009 for $71 million.
