Paul Delaroche, 1797-1856, was a French oil painter, director of the French Academy in Rome. In 1845, he was elected into the National Academy of Design, New York, as an Honorary Academician. Paul Delaroche paintings, with straightforward technique and dramatic compositions, became very popular. The same treatment in Delaroche art was applied to the characters of distant historical times, the founders of Christianity, and various figures such as Napoleon at Fontainebleau, Napoleon at St Helena, or Marie Antoinette leaving the Convention.
