Lovis Corinth, 1858-1925, was a German painter whose mature artwork realized a synthesis of impressionism and expressionism. He created portraits and landscapes of extraordinary vitality and power. Lovis Corinth paintings also included nudes and biblical scenes. In 1921 the artist received an honorary doctorate from the University of Königsberg. He had donated the oil painting Golgotha for the altar of the church of his birthplace, Tapiau. At the end of the Second World War, this painting disappeared without trace.
