Lorenzo Lotto, 1480-1557, was a Northern Italian painter during the High Renaissance, but placed in the Venetian school. He painted mainly altarpieces, religious art and portraits. Lorenzo Lotto paintings represented a transitional stage to the Florentine and Roman Mannerists of the 16th century. The artist was rediscovered at the end of the 19th century, many monographs and several exhibitions have been dedicated to Lorenzo Lotto oil painting, such as the exhibition in Venice in 1953 and one in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, USA, in 1998.
