Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, 1699-1779, was an 18th-century French painter, a master of still life and also noted for genre paintings depicting kitchen maids, children, and domestic activities. Chardin paintings in pastels are now highly valued. The artist frequently painted replicas, which in many cases were virtually indistinguishable. Chardin art extant number is about 200, which are in many major museums, including the Louvre. His influence on the art of the modern era was wide-ranging.
