Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, 1780-1867, was a French Neoclassical painter, whose most significant heir was Degas. Ingres and the other Neoclassicists of his era were regarded as the embodiment of the Romantic spirit, and himself as an important precursor of modern art. Among the historical and mythological Ingres paintings, the most satisfactory are usually those depicting one or two figures.
