Émile Jean-Horace Vernet (1789- 1863) was a French painter of vivid depictions of the French army in the heat of battle, portraits, and Orientalist Arab subjects. Both King Louis-Philippe and Napoléon III of France were his most prolific patrons. Many of Émile Jean-Horace Vernet paintings made during early phase of his career were considered to combine anecdotal accuracy with a charged romantic landscape. Examples of Vernet oil painting in this style include the Battle of Valmy, the Battle of Jemappes, and the Battle of Montmirail.
