مانيه (Édouard Manet), 1832-1883, was a French painter, was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. The early Manet paintings, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, are considered watershed works that mark the genesis of modern art. In 1881, the French government awarded him the Légion d'honneur. Édouard Manet completed his last major oil painting, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, in 1882. In his forties Manet contracted syphilis, for which he received no treatment.
